How to get your scan files
How to get your MRI or CT files
They're yours — here's where they usually are, how to ask for them, and how to open them in 3D for free
Where your scan files are
Scan images are often named as long strings of numbers with no file ending — that's normal, so include them all
On a CD or USB drive
Copy the folder called DICOM — or everything on the disc — to your computer and drag it into KAYMO. You can compress it into a ZIP first if you prefer. You don't need the viewer program on the disc, and if your written report is on it, KAYMO finds that too.
From your hospital's website or app
Many hospitals let you download imaging from the test results section. In Epic MyChart, open Test Results, find your imaging study, and look for a Download Images or DICOM export option. Upload the ZIP you get.
From a scan clinic
Prenuvo: download the ZIP from the reports section of your dashboard. Ezra: open your scan in the app or website and request or download the DICOM files. Q Bio: in Settings, download MRI Raw DICOM Images. Upload the ZIP as it is.
From your dentist
Ask your dentist or the imaging center for the CBCT scan files in DICOM format, on a USB drive or as a download — not screenshots or a PDF.
Your right to a copy
Only got a report? Ask for the images
Contact the imaging department or the medical records office where you had the scan and ask for a copy of your images in DICOM format, on a disc, a USB drive, or as a download. Asking for “DICOM” matters: it gets you the full scan rather than a few printed pictures.
In the US, HIPAA gives you the right to access your medical records, imaging included. In the UK and the EU, data protection law (GDPR) gives you the right to a copy of your personal data. Your provider can tell you how they handle requests. More on your rights to your images
